A properly functioning digestive system is critical to good health. It is becoming increasingly recognized that disturbances in the function of the GI tract can result in a number of symptoms and conditions (such as inflammatory bowel, allergies, skin conditions, constipation, bloating, generalised inflammation etc)   In functional medicine we use a program that goes by the simple acronym of the ‘5Rs’: remove, replace, reinoculate, repair and rebalance. When applied, this cuts to the core of the functions of the gastrointestinal tract.

What is the goal of the programme?

To address dietary and lifestyle issues, and to begin the process of dietary education and change.

To normalize digestion and absorption.

To normalize the balance of gastrointestinal bacteria.

To promote a balanced system of detoxification.

To promote gastrointestinal healing.

  • Remove

Remove focuses on the elimination of food allergens and toxins that can negatively impact GI health. Eliminating common allergen-containing and frequently intolerated foods from the diet is key in improving food allergy related symptoms. Furthermore, supplementation with L. acidophilus and antibacterial phytonutrients will help remove parasites or other bad bugs such as bacteria or yeast that are latently harmful to a healthy GI tract.

  • Replace

Replace focuses on restoring healthy stomach acid levels, replenishing important enzymes lipase, protease, and lactase to facilitate the digestion of fats, proteins, and add back things like digestive enzymes, hydrochloric acid and bile acids that are required for proper digestion and that may be compromised by diet, drugs, diseases, ageing, or other factors.

  • Reinoculate

Reinoculate focuses on creating a healthy GI bacterial balance: Help beneficial bacteria flourish by taking in probiotic foods or supplements that contain the so-called “good” bacteria such as bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus species, and by consuming the high soluble fibre foods that good bugs like to eat, called “prebiotics.”

  • Repair

Repair focuses on healing an irritated or injured GI tract to improve GI function. In addition to the core products, nutritional factors to nourish and protect the GI lining, and facilitate the new growth of intestinal cells to support the healing process.

  • Retain

Retain consists of ensuring the newly established healthy gut function is maintained and supported by helping the lining of the GI tract repair itself, supplying key nutrients, taking regular exercise, managing stress, ensuring good quality sleep and applying foundation nutritional support, such as multivitamins and minerals, prebiotics and l-glutamine.

  • Rebalance: Pay attention to lifestyle choices – sleep, exercise and stress can all affect the GI tract.
